Took the girls to church today and I chatted with a friend of mine. During mass I noticed that her kids were serving so I pointed it out to Taylor and Molly.
After church, Taylor asked if she could be a server. I said, she could, but I think you have to be at least 10 and you have to take a special class. Then she asked if they get the bread first...which they do...which is why I think she wanted to be a server...she likes to be first....*sigh*
Then she asked me:
Taylor: Momma, were you ever a server?
Me: No...when mommy was little only boys could be servers...they wouldn't let girls be servers.
Pause for a moment.
Taylor: What did Martin Luther King think of that?
Me: Um....(chuckle, chuckle)...I'm sure he thought that wasn't very fair.
Too funny!

Share the Love
Very excited to share the Lion King with Taylor.
Side-Bar: I fell in love with my first musical, Phantom of the Opera, in High School courtesy of my band instructors...who were crazy enough to take 100+ students up to Toronto to see it. Quite a few memories come with that trip...some not appropriatte for a family blog...ah youth!...but the impression the theatre left was long-lasting.
We went with Grandma Sue, Grandma Dar, and Heidi....a 'grown-up' girl day. We had lunch at Fridas...yum! Then we had some time to burn before the show so we enjoyed the nice weather and walked around the Farmers Market. Beautiful flowers!
The Lion King was amazing! Great seats, thanks Grandma Sue! The show was pretty true to the Disney movie. It started with the presentation of Simba and the Circle of Life. The costumes of the animals were a-m-a-z-i-n-g! And they walked up the aisles onto the stage...it was so cool. There were singers in the balconies...so powerful!
ZaZu was hilarious! And I may have been caught up in the moment but I was surpised how much the voices of the characters on stage were similar to the ones in the movie...Scar, Mufasa, Timone, Pumba...too funny!
Taylor needed clarification about who Rafiki was but we did agree on the fact that we thought she was one of the best singers...such an amazing sound!
The costumes, the costumes...I can't say it enough...the hyenas (even though they are the bad guys) were so cool...and the giraffes...how was one person in that contraption? And I can't forget the scenery....the grass had some attitude, too funny! I was also impressed with the scene of the stampede...I had wondered aloud on the way there how they would duplicate that scene...but it was done....impressive! The little person in the little elephant during the final scene was rock'in it out...loved it!
I'm not sure Taylor was as 'blown-away' as I was...but I want her to love it...to want to see more...to ask to go again...I wanted to share it with her.

An Almost-Sleep Over
I had my good mommy hat on today for Taylor's friends birthday party.
We sent out popcorn themed invites a few weeks ago with the theme being an 'almost' sleep-over party. The agenda was pizza, then popcorn with a movie. Girls were invited to bring along their sleeping bags, pillow, etc from 6:00-9:30.
When the girls arrived they made bracelets or necklaces. Then they made their own mini-pizzas.

After pizza, we did cupcakes....and since I love a theme the cupcakes looked like bags of popcorn!!!
They tasted yummy!
Then they took over my basement!
They watched a Barbie movie...that was really very cute. A nice bunch of girls...I 'almost' wish it had been a real sleep-over.
Then again........
Maybe not!
Birthday Day
Birthday time at the house again!
The bithday outfit was all picked out and ready to go so the morning madness was a little less on birthday day. I sent her off to school with the promise of a surprise that she would find at school. (I had left a helium balloon on her locker the day before) And she knew her pudding pop treats were already in the school freezer.
When she came home she was excited about her balloon that came home with her and the envelopes in the mailbox, thank you Heidi and Grandma Dar!
We did cupcakes with the daycare friends, and she opened up a present.
Thursday is soccer night so after a cold/slightly wet/very dirty soccer game, we headed to McDonalds for some birthday dinner.
Kids in the booth
Oh wait, that's not all of them.....
Oh, hey there Brody!
Taylor opened some birthday gifts from Grandma Sue. She loved the Hannah Montana towel and other swimming accessories. The bag 'had' to be her backpack for school the next day.
But despite the fact that she had already guessed what was in the box...since it looked a lot like the box Molly had gotten...and apparently she does listen when I talk, since I had told her at Molly's birthday (3 months ago) to ask for one for her birthday. Her favorite was....
The Elephant Pillow Pet!
Eight years down.....can't wait to see what the future holds!
Daddy/Daughter Dance
One of the local HS clubs hosted a daddy/daughter dance. Not only that but it was hinted that 'princesses' would be available for pictures.
There were corsages!
There were corsages!
We tried to take pictures before they left.
We tried....
One was more cooperative than the other!
Chris called me from the HS and said that the line to get in was crazy...a couple hundred people. So it was a little overwhelming. Check out my little wall-flowers!
They did pose with a 'princess' too!
I'm guessing whoever had a yellow prom dress got to be Belle!
But the first thing I heard when they got home was....
There were treats!

God Bless
A Gift
On May 2nd, 2010 Taylor had her First Communion.
I was one of her faith formation teachers this year so I had a special part in her preparation for her special day. And though I have my qualms with Catholism, and agree to disagree on many fronts, I did enjoy my time with her this year.
On the ride in on Sunday, I was preparing her with last minute reminders. What do you do with your hands while you're walking up? Fold them. How do you hold your hands to receive the host? One on top of the other. What do you say? Amen. How do you put the host in your mouth? Hand is a plate, fingers as the fork...don't shovel it in. Do you chew on the way back to the pew? No.
I'm a tough teacher!
Then I hear from Taylor, "Molly, it tastes like cardboard."
We arrived at church early so Taylor could line up with her class and walk in together.
The dress Taylor decided to wear was actually mine...we'll call it....vintage.
The ceremony went well. After chuch there were some group pictures, but I had planned to take most of my pictures back at the house so we didn't have to fight the mob for some altar space.
My reasons for choosing St John's were very apparent to me on Sunday. After chuch there were lots of people to talk to...lots of friends and family...lots of generations of people that I know and love. And that part....community...belonging to a large 'family' is more of what church is about for me than the archaic traditions and masculine predominance....Ok..off my pulpit. Point is....it felt right!
Back at the house we took some photos in the beautiful weather!
Godparents, Aunt Heidi and Uncle Dave
Then we all had some lunch and some yummy cake. We visited with friends and family. We laughed, the kids ran around, and we enjoyed the day. When the clouds rolled in we called it a day.
Growing up fast!
